Military dogs stand guard at the airport to protect sleeping soldiers

Dogs play an important role in the U.S. military. They risked their lives to protect humans and mastered many skills that humans cannot master, such as using the sense of smell to detect explosives. They also form a natural bond with their human teammates that can last long after the rollout is over.

These dogs are so loyal and protective that they can be a great source of comfort and companionship for soldiers. That's what a touching viral photo shows: a loyal army dog guarding a soldier napping at an airport. This photo was taken at the Indianapolis airport after an alert German Shepherd was spotted standing guard for his napping teammate.

They were among 10 soldiers and two dogs resting at the airport, WPTV reported. It's unclear if they're preparing for a deployment flight or heading home, but it's clear they're tired and need to take a nap if possible.

And the soldier can rest easy knowing he has a loyal guard behind him, keeping an eye on him at all times, making sure no one can bother him—perhaps even acting as a duvet.

What a sweet photo. It's a reminder, especially of dogs in the military, how loving and loyal they can be: they always have the support of soldiers.
